Считается, что такая нарезка оказывает меньшее сопротоевление пуле (снаряду). На практиле, естественно, подобную нарезку получают не тросиком.

It is interesting that smooth, oblique shape of a cable attracted attention not only combustion engineers, but gun manufacturers, too. I one pulls the cable trough a barrel (assuming that barrel is made of a very soft material, and the cable of a hardened steel) one can observe a rifling pattern as on the picture below. It is assumed that such a smooth rifling causes less resistance to the projectile. And, of course, this type of rifling is manufactured very differently (without a cable). But, still, coincidence between cross-section of tnis type of barrel and a simple cable is interesting, in my opinion.
